Sergio Perez Penalized for Unsafe Driving, Red Bull Fined After Canadian Grand Prix

Posted : 10 June 2024

Sergio Perez incurred a three-place grid penalty for the upcoming Formula One race in Spain after he continued driving his car in an unsafe condition during Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix, resulting in a €25,000 fine for Red Bull. Perez's race ended in retirement in the pits following a crash that damaged his rear wing, causing carbon fibre debris to scatter across the track.

According to Article 26.10 of the sporting regulations, drivers with significant mechanical issues must leave the track as soon as it's safe to do so. Despite being advised by Red Bull to return to the pits to prevent a potential safety car situation, Perez continued driving with the damaged rear wing.

The stewards stated that Perez's actions posed safety risks, warranting both a sporting penalty and a financial fine. While Perez has faced retirement in his last two races, his teammate Max Verstappen, who won Sunday's race, continues to dominate with six victories out of nine races so far.
