Sainz Sets Fastest Time in Bahrain Testing as Norris Stays Optimistic

Posted : 28 February 2025

Carlos Sainz showcased impressive endurance during pre-season testing on Thursday, recording the fastest lap time of 1min 29.348s while completing twice the Bahrain Grand Prix’s race distance in his new Williams. His performance on the second day of testing set the pace for the grid’s preparations ahead of the season-opening race in Australia on March 16.

Lewis Hamilton, who triggered Sainz’s move to Williams with his transfer to Ferrari, followed closely behind, just 0.031s off the Spaniard’s time. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc demonstrated Ferrari’s strong form by securing third place, only 0.083s adrift.

Further down the order, Mercedes teammates George Russell and Kimi Antonelli placed ahead of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, while Liam Lawson filled in for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who was given the day off. One of Verstappen’s main challengers for the upcoming season, McLaren’s Lando Norris, remained over a second and a half behind Sainz but appeared unconcerned.

Reflecting on his past on-track battles with Verstappen, Norris dismissed any lingering tensions, emphasizing their mutual respect and eagerness for future duels. He expressed confidence in his team’s pre-season work, acknowledging that the final standings in testing hold little significance compared to actual race performance in Australia.

Norris was particularly encouraged by McLaren’s stability heading into the last day of testing, noting that the car felt similar to last year’s—a promising sign given past struggles in Bahrain. Speaking to Sky Sports, he highlighted the importance of ensuring everything functions smoothly before the first race, rather than focusing on outright lap times.

Despite various technical changes, he was satisfied with McLaren’s progress, stating that the team’s methodical approach aimed to prevent any unexpected setbacks in Melbourne.
