Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has identified Max Verstappen as the central figure in the team’s efforts to return to the top of Formula One, praising the four-time world champion’s speed, technical expertise and commitment to motorsport. Speaking ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Mekies stressed that Verstappen remains fundamental to the team’s ambitions of launching another successful era.
Mekies described the Dutch driver as an exceptional talent who contributes far beyond his performances on the track. He highlighted Verstappen’s technical understanding, straightforward communication and willingness to share his passion for racing, adding that their working relationship remains positive even when they disagree.
The Red Bull boss also reflected on his own future after recently signing a contract extension that will keep him in charge through the 2031 season. He expressed gratitude for the confidence shown in him by the organisation, describing the agreement as motivation to continue developing the team and pursuing its long-term goals.
Mekies made it clear that Red Bull’s ambitions extend beyond occasional victories, with the team determined to establish a new period of sustained success. The extension provides continuity as the organisation works to strengthen its competitiveness under Formula One’s evolving technical regulations.
Red Bull’s recent performances have offered encouragement after a challenging start to the campaign. The team demonstrated a similar ability to recover last season, when Verstappen mounted a late championship challenge against McLaren’s Lando Norris, eventually missing out on the drivers’ title by just two points.
This season, Verstappen has again helped drive a revival, arriving in Austin after consecutive victories in Malaysia and Singapore. Those results have restored momentum to Red Bull’s campaign and strengthened hopes of finishing the season on a high.
Although the championship battle remains a major focus, Verstappen is also aiming to maintain his form during the remaining races and challenge for second place in the drivers’ standings. Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli could secure the title in Austin, adding another storyline to the weekend’s action.
According to Mekies, Red Bull’s determination to fight through difficult periods has been essential to its recovery. He praised the workforce for responding to early-season setbacks and finding ways to improve performance, describing the team’s resilience as one of its defining strengths.
He also pointed out that Red Bull is still in the early stages of its own engine programme. With substantial development work remaining, the team intends to use the experience gained during every race weekend to improve its understanding of the car and prepare more effectively for next season.
Mekies believes that continued learning, combined with Verstappen’s leadership and the team’s collective determination, can help Red Bull close the gap to its rivals and build a stronger foundation for future championship challenges.
