Title contenders Elfyn Evans and Sebastien Ogier faced a challenging second day at the season-ending Rally Saudi Arabia on Thursday. The rally, held on the dusty gravel roads north of Jeddah, saw unexpected performances shake up the early standings.
Latvian driver Martins Sesks emerged as the surprise leader after the morning’s stages, posting the fastest times in both the second and third tests. The 26-year-old M-Sport Ford driver held a slender 1.3-second advantage over compatriot Adrien Fourmaux.
Ogier, who trails Evans by just three points in the championship race, endured a difficult morning, finishing the session seventh and nearly 30 seconds behind Sesks. His Toyota teammate Evans was also hampered by limited grip while having to open the road on the loose gravel, ending the morning in eighth place, 50.3 seconds off the pace.
Despite the tough conditions, which Ogier described as “terrible,” the Frenchman remains in contention for a record-tying ninth world rally title after his win in Japan in the previous round. This season has been remarkable for Ogier, particularly as he competed as a part-time driver and missed three of the 14 championship rounds.
Meanwhile, Finland’s Kalle Rovanpera, 24 points behind Evans and still with a slim mathematical chance at the championship, suffered a puncture that cost him valuable time. He concluded the morning over a minute adrift of Sesks.
The inaugural Rally Saudi Arabia continues with four more stages on Thursday, as the drivers battle to finalize the championship standings.
