Rajah Caruth wins in Las Vegas, becomes third black driver to triumph in NASCAR National Series

Posted : 02 March 2024

Rajah Caruth, driving for Spire Motorsports, fulfilled his promise of more successes as he clinched his maiden NASCAR Truck Series victory at the Victoria's Voice Foundation 200 in Las Vegas.

The 21-year-old, an alumnus of NASCAR's Drive for Diversity program, secured a historic win from the pole position, becoming the third Black driver to achieve victory in a NASCAR national series race, joining the ranks of Hall of Famer Wendell Scott and Bubba Wallace.

Caruth's exceptional day included winning his first Truck Series pole earlier, narrowly beating Christian Eckes by 0.001 seconds.

The pivotal moment in the race came during a 62-lap green-flag run to the finish when Caruth's crew chief, Chad Walter, strategically called the No. 71 Chevrolet to pit road.

The pit crew executed a flawless stop, allowing Caruth to inherit the lead on Lap 114 with a substantial advantage over Taylor Gray.

Leading for 38 laps, Caruth maintained his composure to secure victory, finishing 0.851 seconds ahead of Tyler Ankrum, who made a late surge to claim the second spot.

Reflecting on his triumph, Caruth expressed gratitude to his sponsors, including HendrickCars.com, and credited his team for their support throughout the race.

Several contenders faced setbacks due to errors in execution, with Ty Majeski, leading for 40 laps and sweeping the first two stages, receiving a speeding penalty on pit road on Lap 102.

Similarly, Daytona winner Nick Sanchez's chances were dashed by a late-race penalty, emphasizing the fine margins in NASCAR competition.
