Brazilian driver Rafael Camara is preparing for an unusual Formula One debut as he gets ready to race for Haas at his home Sao Paulo Grand Prix this weekend.
The 21-year-old will face a significant challenge, having never competed in Formula One or driven at the famous Interlagos circuit. Despite the added pressure of making his first appearance in front of his home crowd, Camara is looking forward to the opportunity and is determined to enjoy the experience.
The Ferrari Driver Academy member admitted he was surprised by the sudden promotion, expressing gratitude to Haas for placing their confidence in him. He also acknowledged that competing at Interlagos for the first time will be a new experience, but remains optimistic about adapting quickly.
Camara's promotion came after Haas confirmed that Esteban Ocon would not return to the team's race seat for the remainder of the 2026 season. The Brazilian had originally been scheduled to take part in a Friday practice session for Ferrari by driving Charles Leclerc's car, but the Haas opportunity brought his full F1 debut forward.
He had already been announced as a Haas driver for the 2027 campaign. His arrival follows Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa's appearance in Mexico City, where he replaced Ocon and finished 10th. Hirakawa is unavailable for the Sao Paulo event because of his World Endurance Championship commitments.
Camara will partner Oliver Bearman, who has impressed during his time with Haas this season. The Brazilian is hoping to learn as much as possible from the British driver as he adjusts to the demands of Formula One.
The team has yet to confirm whether Camara will also compete in the remaining races of the season. His immediate focus, however, is on making a strong first impression in Brazil, while he continues to lead the Formula Two championship with two rounds remaining.
The final F2 events are scheduled to take place alongside the Formula One races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, although uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict has raised questions about whether those rounds will go ahead.
