Pierre Gasly Restored to Third Place in Monaco Grand Prix as FIA Rescinds Speeding Penalties

Posted : 13 June 2026

Alpine has successfully overturned the two post-race penalties that cost Pierre Gasly his podium finish at the Monaco Grand Prix. The FIA stewards rescinded both five-second time penalties on Friday morning after a Right of Review hearing. This decision promotes the French driver from seventh back to his original third-place finish.

The initial penalties were issued after the timing system clocked Gasly exceeding the 60km/h pit lane speed limit. He was registered going over the limit by 0.1km/h and 0.4km/h during two separate pit stops. However, Alpine presented new LIDAR scan data proving the official tracking sector was measured incorrectly. Formula One Management had configured the zone at 26.92 meters; yet, track changes made the actual shortest available path 0.77 meters shorter.

This tracking discrepancy triggered false speeding reports for five different drivers during the event. The stewards reviewed the telemetry and concluded with comfortable satisfaction that Gasly did not exceed the limit. Because Gasly did not serve his time penalties during the active race, the results remained open to a retrospective challenge.

The revised classification alters the final order of the prestigious race. Isack Hadjar, who originally partook in the podium ceremony, drops down to fourth position. McLaren's Oscar Piastri and the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad also drop one position each. Rival teams McLaren and Red Bull both strongly contested the review and have already served notice of their intention to appeal the decision.

Alpine expressed great satisfaction with the ruling in an official statement. The team thanked the FIA and Formula One Management for their transparency and cooperation. Gasly had previously described the initial loss of his dream Monaco podium as heartbreaking. The focus of the grid now shifts to the upcoming race weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
