McLaren driver Oscar Piastri expressed surprise at the severity of the 10-second penalty he received following a collision at the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday and indicated that he expects further discussions with Formula One’s governing body to understand the decision.
The stewards deemed Piastri “wholly responsible” for the incident, issuing two penalty points on his licence in addition to the time penalty, a decision that drew criticism from fellow drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.
Speaking ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Piastri noted the support he had received from other drivers, highlighting that their perspectives reinforced his view that he was not entirely at fault.
The incident involved a clash with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli that eliminated Ferrari’s Leclerc from the race, while Piastri ultimately finished fifth behind teammate Lando Norris.
The 23-year-old confirmed that he and McLaren plan to engage with the FIA to gain clarity on how the stewards arrived at the penalty and to determine if current guidelines need reviewing.
“It was a bit of a surprise for everyone that this penalty was so harsh, myself included,” he said, emphasizing that his goal was not to push for immediate rule changes but to understand the rationale for better consistency in future decisions.
Piastri added that previous discussions between drivers, teams, and officials had been productive and expressed confidence that the upcoming talks would be similarly constructive.
