Perez Secures Two-Year Extension with Red Bull, Stabilizing Team Ahead of Canada Grand Prix

Posted : 07 June 2024

With Sergio Perez signing a two-year extension this week to stay with Red Bull as the teammate of three-time world champion Max Verstappen, the Formula One leaders were in high spirits on Thursday. The future of Red Bull's driver lineup had been the subject of much speculation early in the season, with names like Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Red Bull's own Daniel Ricciardo rumored to be contenders for the seat. However, Red Bull ended the uncertainty on Tuesday, with both Perez and Verstappen expressing their satisfaction with the decision ahead of the Canada Grand Prix.

"It's really nice to get this distraction out of the way so we can focus on performance," said Perez, the 34-year-old Mexican driver. Red Bull, facing competition from Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes, aims for a reset in Montreal. Verstappen, who dominated in Montreal last year, is looking for a third consecutive victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Despite winning 19 of 22 races in the previous season, Verstappen has not been as dominant recently, failing to win three of the last six races.

Perez has been a reliable teammate, supporting Verstappen to three drivers' titles, and the team will be counting on that support again this Sunday. Verstappen expressed his approval of Perez's extension, stating, "I'm happy that he's staying; we always worked well, and it brings stability to the team." Perez acknowledged the importance of focusing on his performance and career, saying, "At the end of the day, I'm here to do the best for my career and I'm happy with what I have achieved."
