Pedro Acosta set the pace in Friday’s practice sessions for the Valencia Grand Prix, demonstrating strong form ahead of the season finale. Aprilia’s Jorge Martin made a successful return to racing following a collarbone fracture sustained at the Japanese Grand Prix in September.
Martin, cleared to ride this week, finished 22nd in the second practice session, 1.164 seconds behind Acosta. The 2024 world champion has faced a challenging season due to injuries, which prevented him from defending his title, now held by Marc Marquez.
In the championship standings, Alex Marquez secured second place in October, while Marco Bezzecchi is on course to finish third in Valencia, holding a 35-point lead over Francesco Bagnaia, who is currently fourth. Bezzecchi experienced an early crash but managed to recover, finishing just 0.053 seconds behind Acosta in the second session. Franco Morbidelli completed the top three fastest times.
Bagnaia struggled in practice, placing 14th and will need to compete in the first qualifying session on Saturday to improve his starting position. Meanwhile, KTM rider Acosta continues his hunt for a first MotoGP victory. His team has not claimed a Grand Prix win since 2022, making Valencia their last opportunity this season.
Pramac Yamaha’s Jack Miller posted the fastest time in the morning session but ended up sixth in the combined results. He was beaten by Trackhouse Aprilia rookie Ai Ogura in fifth and Alex Marquez in fourth.
Last year, the Valencia Grand Prix was cancelled due to devastating flooding in the region, making this year’s race particularly significant for riders and teams alike.
