Estonian rally driver Ott Tänak delivered a dominant performance to win the Acropolis Rally in Greece on Sunday, overcoming a late gearbox issue to claim his first World Rally Championship (WRC) victory of the 2025 season. His success marked the first win of the year for Hyundai after Toyota had claimed the opening six rounds.
Tänak, the 2019 world champion, had established control of the rally early on Friday and maintained his lead throughout the weekend. Despite a mechanical scare in the final Power Stage, where a gearbox issue forced him to limp to the finish, he managed to secure the win with a margin of 32.8 seconds over second-placed Sébastien Ogier.
"It was an excellent weekend," Tänak said after the race. "We did our best and managed to stay out of trouble." His calm and consistent driving proved crucial in the tough Greek terrain, as he held off the advances of his rivals even as his car faltered in the closing moments.
The victory is a significant milestone for Hyundai, ending Toyota’s early-season dominance. The team’s weekend was further bolstered by Adrien Fourmaux, who finished in third place, albeit over two minutes behind Ogier. This double podium result helps Hyundai reassert itself in the championship standings after a slow start to the season.
With the win, Tänak climbs to third in the overall standings, now just 12 points behind leader Elfyn Evans of Toyota, who finished fourth in Greece. He trails Ogier by only three points, although the Frenchman is running a reduced schedule this season. Ogier is not expected to return until September’s rally in Chile, limiting his championship prospects despite strong performances when he does compete.
Reigning world champion Thierry Neuville of Belgium, also driving for Hyundai, completed the top five, continuing a consistent but winless run in the 2025 campaign.
The WRC season resumes with the eighth round in Tänak’s home country of Estonia, scheduled for the weekend of July 20. The momentum now appears to be shifting, with Hyundai gaining strength as the season reaches its midpoint.
