Oscar Piastri Targets New F1 Regulations Following Ollie Bearman’s Violent 50G Crash at Suzuka

Posted : 30 March 2026

Oscar Piastri sparked further debate over Formula 1’s 2026 technical regulations following a terrifying accident involving Haas driver Ollie Bearman at the Japanese Grand Prix. Bearman lost control of his car on lap 24 while approaching Turn 13, resulting in a 50G impact into the barriers. The incident occurred due to a massive speed differential caused by the sport's new energy recovery systems.

The crash happened as Bearman was closing in on Franco Colapinto at a speed difference of approximately 50mph. This was attributed to "super-clipping," a phenomenon where cars suddenly decelerate when harvesting battery power. To avoid a rear-end collision with the Alpine ahead, Bearman was forced to swerve onto the grass, which sent his Haas spinning violently into the wall.

In the post-race cooldown room, podium finishers Kimi Antonelli, Oscar Piastri, and Charles Leclerc watched the replay of the incident for the first time. Piastri winced at the severity of the impact before making a pointed remark to Leclerc. The Australian driver noted that he finally understood the "mushroom" reference, a term drivers have used to compare the new battery boost to Mario Kart.

The "mushroom" effect refers to the sudden, unpredictable bursts of speed granted by the battery’s overtake mode. Drivers had warned FIA officials prior to the race that the combination of sudden power surges and aggressive energy harvesting could lead to a major accident. Veteran driver Fernando Alonso previously described modern overtaking as an "evasive maneuver" rather than a tactical move.

Bearman was visibly in pain as he climbed from the wreckage but fortunately escaped serious injury. Medical tests later confirmed that the young Briton suffered no fractures. He released a video statement shortly after the race to reassure fans that he was okay. However, the sheer force of the 50G impact has left the paddock demanding immediate safety reviews.

Carlos Sainz was among the most vocal critics after the race, stating that Bearman’s accident was "just a matter of time." The Williams driver urged the FIA to reconsider the current loopholes in the regulations to prevent similar high-speed scares. The crash has significantly shifted the narrative of the weekend from Antonelli’s victory to the inherent risks of the current technical era.

In response to the growing backlash, the FIA announced that meetings are scheduled for April to assess the operation of the new rules. Officials will determine if refinements are required to manage energy deployment more safely. For now, the governing body has stated that speculating on specific changes would be premature until the data is fully analyzed.
