Oscar Piastri's Success in F1 Boosts Australian Motorsport

Posted : 01 May 2025

Australian motorsport is poised for growth as it recovers from the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the success of Oscar Piastri in Formula One fueling a surge in interest. Piastri, who helped McLaren secure the constructors' championship last year, has become a national hero after his back-to-back wins in the Middle East, positioning him as a favorite to win his first drivers' title. His achievements have not only captivated fans but also significantly benefitted Motorsport Australia (MA), the governing body for motorsport in the country.

According to MA CEO Sunil Vohra, Piastri’s rise in F1 has been transformative for the sport in Australia. His visibility on the global stage is inspiring the next generation of motorsport enthusiasts, particularly as young people see his success as proof of what’s achievable within the Australian system.

The increased interest in motorsport has been reflected in the organization’s improved financial health, with MA reporting a surplus for the 2024 calendar year, reversing the previous year's deficit. Vohra emphasizes that Piastri's success has boosted participation in grassroots programs and clubs, indicating a direct correlation between international success and increased local engagement.

Despite the financial challenges faced by motorsport, including rising insurance costs and economic pressures from inflation, MA is focusing on maintaining affordability for participants. Vohra acknowledges the impact of the broader economic environment but remains optimistic about the future, citing initiatives such as the “Girls on Track” program.

The initiative, which encourages young girls to explore STEM subjects and potential careers in motorsport, has seen significant uptake, with over 3,500 girls participating in Australia alone. This focus on inclusion, alongside the prominence of Australian female drivers in the F1 Academy, reflects a concerted effort to broaden the sport's appeal and ensure its sustainability for future generations.
