Oscar Piastri Reportedly Weighing McLaren Exit as F1 Transfer Rumours Intensify

Posted : 08 July 2026

Oscar Piastri is reportedly considering triggering a release clause in his McLaren contract, a move that could spark one of the biggest driver transfers in recent Formula 1 history.

According to reports, the Australian is unhappy with his current situation at McLaren following ongoing frustration over the team's "Papaya Rules" and the handling of its two drivers. Piastri remains under contract until the end of the 2028 season, but an exit clause could allow him to leave earlier if certain performance conditions are met.

The reported clause can be activated if Piastri is outside the top five in the drivers' championship by the summer break. With two races remaining before that point, he currently sits sixth in the standings, leaving the possibility of an early departure.

Tensions between Piastri's management team, led by former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, and McLaren have reportedly increased since the 2025 season. The relationship is said to have deteriorated following several controversial team orders that required Piastri to give up positions in favour of teammate Lando Norris under McLaren's internal racing guidelines.

Reports suggest Piastri is now evaluating whether to activate the clause, with discussions also believed to be taking place with rival teams, including Audi, ahead of the 2027 campaign.

A potential departure would create one of the most sought-after seats on the Formula 1 grid and could pave the way for reigning world champion Max Verstappen to join McLaren.

Verstappen has also been linked with a move away from Red Bull after expressing frustration with the team's current car and the impact of recent regulation changes. Reports indicate the Dutch driver also has a performance-related exit clause in his contract, which could allow him to leave if specific championship targets are not achieved before the summer break.

If both drivers were to activate their respective clauses, speculation has centred on a direct swap. Verstappen would move to McLaren, while Piastri could become Red Bull's long-term replacement for the four-time world champion.

Red Bull has long been linked with Piastri as one of the sport's brightest young talents, while McLaren has consistently expressed admiration for Verstappen's abilities.

Despite growing speculation, no official decisions have been announced by either driver or team. With Formula 1's traditional "silly season" approaching, the coming weeks are expected to provide greater clarity on whether the rumours develop into one of the biggest driver moves in recent years.
