Ogier Edges Early Lead as Croatia Rally Day 1 Delivers High-Speed Drama

Posted : 09 April 2026

Day 1 of the Croatia Rally, the fourth round of the FIA World Rally Championship, delivered intense competition across the demanding asphalt stages as drivers battled for early control of the event. The rally, which returned to the WRC calendar in 2026, once again showcased Croatia’s fast and technical roads, setting the stage for a closely fought contest.

Eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier emerged as the early leader after a strong and consistent performance across the opening stages. Ogier set the pace in key sections, using his experience on tarmac to build a narrow advantage over his closest rivals. His ability to balance speed with precision proved decisive on roads where grip levels changed rapidly.

Close behind, Thierry Neuville and Elfyn Evans remained firmly in contention, separated by only seconds after a competitive day of racing. Both drivers pushed hard throughout the stages, trading strong times and keeping pressure on the leader in what is shaping up to be a tight three-way battle.

The day’s stages highlighted the unpredictable nature of the Croatian asphalt, with changing weather conditions and tricky surfaces testing driver confidence and car setup. Several crews experienced minor issues and time losses, underlining how small mistakes can have significant consequences in such a closely matched field.

Elsewhere, leading contenders including Ott Tänak and Kalle Rovanperä remained within striking distance, ensuring that the battle for overall victory remains wide open heading into Day 2. With time gaps minimal, any shift in conditions or strategy could quickly reshape the leaderboard.

Day 1 set a thrilling tone for the Croatia Rally, combining high-speed precision with razor-thin margins. As the rally progresses, drivers will need to maintain consistency and manage risks carefully, with the fight for victory still very much undecided.
