Lando Norris Takes Miami Sprint Pole as McLaren End Mercedes’ Dominance

Posted : 02 May 2026

World champion Lando Norris delivered a statement performance at the Miami Grand Prix, taking sprint race pole position and ending Mercedes’ early-season qualifying dominance. Driving an upgraded McLaren, he topped the timesheets ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli and teammate Oscar Piastri.

Norris produced a best lap of 1:27.869 to secure pole, with Antonelli finishing 0.222 seconds behind in his Mercedes. Piastri completed an impressive session for McLaren in third, reinforcing the team’s strong pace following recent car upgrades introduced during the season break.

The result marked the first time Mercedes had been beaten in qualifying this year after a dominant start to the campaign. McLaren’s performance suggested a shift in competitive balance, particularly in the hot conditions of Miami where tyre management and grip proved decisive.

Norris said the result reflected the success of McLaren’s upgrade package and praised the team for delivering a car that felt significantly improved. He added that the circuit has historically suited McLaren and that the developments had delivered the expected performance gains.

Behind the top three, Ferrari showed improved pace with Charles Leclerc finishing fourth, while Max Verstappen placed fifth in his Red Bull. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton followed, as Mercedes and Ferrari continued to battle closely in the midfield of the top teams.

Earlier qualifying segments saw fluctuating pace among the front runners, with Ferrari briefly leading before McLaren asserted control. Mercedes struggled slightly in the final shootout, unable to replicate their earlier dominance from practice sessions.

The sprint qualifying session ended with McLaren firmly in control, setting up a competitive sprint race in Miami and signalling a possible shift in momentum in the Formula One title battle.
