Lando Norris Apologises to Franco Colapinto Over Azerbaijan GP Ban Comments

Lando Norris has apologised to Franco Colapinto for calling for the Alpine driver to be banned after a crash ended all three drivers’ Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday.

Colapinto locked up under braking during the first Safety Car restart in Baku and went into Turn 1, hitting Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly. Gasly was then sent into Norris, with all three cars forced to retire from the race.

Speaking shortly after the incident, Norris expressed his frustration and argued that incidents of that nature should result in a race ban. He later reflected on his comments and contacted Colapinto directly to apologise.

In a statement shared on social media, the reigning world champion acknowledged that his reaction was influenced by the emotions of the moment but accepted that it did not justify his remarks. Norris also recognised that he had made mistakes during his own racing career.

Norris said he and Colapinto had reached an understanding and remained friends, with both drivers now looking ahead to the next race.

Colapinto had already accepted responsibility for the Baku incident, describing it as a major mistake. The FIA stewards imposed a 10-second penalty on the Alpine driver, which was converted into a five-place grid drop for the next race because he retired before serving the original sanction.

Colapinto will therefore carry the five-place grid penalty into the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

The incident also generated significant online reaction involving both drivers, prompting Alpine to condemn abuse directed at Colapinto. Norris’ apology has since brought the dispute between the two drivers to a close ahead of the next round of the Formula 1 season.
