Ducati announced on Friday that its test rider, Michele Pirro, will take the place of reigning MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez at the upcoming Australian Grand Prix on Phillip Island.
Marquez, who secured his seventh MotoGP title at the Japanese Grand Prix last month, will be sidelined for the next two races following a crash during last weekend’s Indonesian Grand Prix. The incident left him with a shoulder fracture and ligament damage, forcing him to step away temporarily from competition.
In an official statement, Ducati said: “Following the injury that has ruled Marc Marquez out of the next two rounds of the 2025 MotoGP season, the Ducati Lenovo Team confirms that Michele Pirro will compete in his place at the Australian event.”
The team has not yet clarified whether Pirro will continue to race at the Malaysian Grand Prix later in October. The 39-year-old Italian last competed in MotoGP during the final round of the 2024 season with the VR46 Racing Team.
Marquez is expected to make his return for the last two races of the year, set to take place in Portugal and Valencia next month.
