This weekend, the Mexican Grand Prix celebrates a decade of high-speed excitement, packed grandstands, and international recognition, marking ten years since its return to the Formula One calendar in 2015. The race has become a key economic contributor and a platform to showcase Mexico to the world.
Federico Gonzalez, director of the Formula One Mexican Grand Prix, shared plans for the anniversary celebrations and reflected on the event's journey. “Every year we aim to enhance the experience for fans, focusing on both the smallest details and large-scale coordination with the city,” Gonzalez told Reuters. The event thrives on cooperation between FIA officials, local government, sponsors, and various institutions, which he described as “a project for everyone.”
Gonzalez highlighted the pandemic as one of the race's greatest challenges, particularly in managing COVID-19 safety measures. Despite this, the Grand Prix has consistently served as an economic engine for Mexico City, boosting tourism, filling hotels and restaurants, and promoting the country as vibrant and industrious. The event is funded through a trust with private contributors rather than public money, ensuring it generates benefits without burdening taxpayers.
“This project showcases Mexico on the global stage. You can feel the city’s energy during race weekend—it’s a unique atmosphere,” Gonzalez said, noting how the Grand Prix helps demonstrate the nation’s capacity to host large-scale international events, including next year’s soccer World Cup, which Mexico will co-host with the United States and Canada.
The Mexican Grand Prix also reflects the country’s distinct culture, with trophies designed by local artisans and activities that give the race its unique identity. “This is Mexico, and that authenticity is what gives the Grand Prix its personality,” Gonzalez explained.
Looking to the future, he expressed optimism, dismissing ideas of hosting another venue elsewhere in the country. “I hope it continues here for 30 or 40 more years. This race belongs to everyone,” he added.
