Mercedes Drops Monaco Grand Prix Appeal Following Pit Lane Penalty Dispute

Posted : 19 June 2026

Mercedes have officially withdrawn their challenge to the outcome of the Monaco Grand Prix, bringing an end to their attempt to review the controversial pit lane speeding penalties that affected several drivers during the race.

The Formula 1 championship-leading team had previously submitted a request for a right of review to the FIA after a penalty imposed on Alpine driver Pierre Gasly was overturned. Gasly had originally received a 10-second sanction for exceeding the pit lane speed limit before the governing body later reversed the decision.

The issue attracted significant attention because multiple drivers were penalized for the same offence, including Mercedes driver George Russell. Russell’s penalty proved costly, dropping him from a podium position in third place to 12th in the final classification.

During Alpine’s successful appeal, it was revealed that race officials had calculated the pit lane speed limit using an incorrect measurement. The distance used for the assessment was reportedly longer than the actual route drivers could take through the pit lane, raising questions about the validity of the penalties issued during the race.

Mercedes initially sought a review of the matter, with a hearing scheduled for June 20. However, after further consideration, the team decided not to proceed with the case.

According to the team's assessment, there was no realistic process available that could restore Russell to the finishing position he might have achieved without the penalty. Mercedes also concluded that continuing the dispute would provide little benefit and would unnecessarily prolong the controversy.

As a result, the Monaco Grand Prix results will remain unchanged, and Russell’s 12th-place finish will stand despite the concerns surrounding the original pit lane speed calculations.

While Mercedes have chosen to step back from the legal process, other Formula 1 disputes remain active. Separate appeals involving McLaren and Red Bull Racing are still being considered by the FIA Court of Appeal, meaning further developments could yet emerge elsewhere in the championship.

Mercedes’ decision closes one chapter of the Monaco controversy, allowing the team to shift its focus back to the title race as the Formula 1 season continues.
