McLaren team principal Andrea Stella believes Lando Norris will respond with determination after the disappointment of retiring from Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix.
The British driver now trails teammate Oscar Piastri by 34 points in their fight for the Formula One championship, with nine rounds of the season still to go. Despite the setback, Norris has pledged to attack every race with maximum commitment.
Stella expressed confidence that Norris’s competitive spirit would shine through. “When he says he’s going full commitment, it means he’ll try to push himself even further and draw more from his incredible potential,” Stella said. “We know his talent is immense, and this situation in the championship will only fuel his motivation.”
So far in 2025, Piastri has claimed seven victories from 15 races, compared to five for Norris. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has secured two wins, while Mercedes driver George Russell triumphed in Canada earlier in the year.
Looking ahead, McLaren will aim for a sixth consecutive victory at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend. Norris has shown pace at Monza before, taking pole position and fastest lap last year before finishing third behind teammate Piastri and race-winner Charles Leclerc. He also secured second place there in 2021 but is yet to stand on the top step at the iconic circuit.
Stella emphasized that McLaren will continue to let its drivers race freely while supporting both equally. “We’ll make sure Lando stays in the fighting spirit, and I think that will come naturally. If anything, we may even see a better version of him in the coming races. This is going to be a great spectacle for Formula One and will make the battle with Oscar even more exciting.”
