McLaren insists the 2025 Formula One drivers’ championship remains within their control, with Oscar Piastri leading Lando Norris.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has affirmed that the drivers’ championship is still within McLaren’s reach, despite a commanding performance from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at the US Grand Prix. McLaren have already secured the constructors’ title for a second consecutive year, with Oscar Piastri leading the drivers’ standings by 14 points ahead of teammate Lando Norris.
The Woking-based team last clinched the drivers’ championship with Lewis Hamilton in 2008, and they have not achieved a championship double since 1998. While Verstappen is 40 points behind in the standings, he has reduced a 104-point deficit since the end of August with three wins in the last four races. With five rounds remaining, the championship battle remains open.
Reflecting on the US GP weekend, Stella highlighted McLaren’s performance as reassuring. Norris started on the front row but was overtaken by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the start. Despite being briefly held up during the race, Stella felt Norris had the pace to challenge for victory. He also noted the impact of the Saturday sprint race, where Verstappen won from pole while Piastri and Norris collided, leaving McLaren with limited data for Sunday’s main race.
Stella stressed that McLaren’s focus remains on maximising performance and controlling their own destiny. “The outcome of this season and the drivers’ championship is in our hands, it’s not in someone else’s hands. That’s the mindset we want to have and that’s the mindset we will have,” he said. With no upgrades planned for the remainder of the season, the team is now concentrating on preparing the 2026 car, while optimistic about upcoming tracks that could allow them to extend their advantage over Verstappen. The next race takes place this weekend in Mexico City, round 20 of the 24-race calendar.
