Max Verstappen’s win at Imola last weekend confirmed that Red Bull’s champion remains a major contender in the Formula One title race. However, this Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix is expected to favor McLaren, as the team looks to regain momentum on a track that suits their car’s characteristics.
With its slow and twisting layout, the historic Monaco circuit has often played to McLaren’s strengths, and they hold the record for the most wins at this venue with 15.
Despite Ferrari’s recent struggles in qualifying, last year’s Monaco winner Charles Leclerc remains a threat, as does Mercedes. The spotlight will also be on McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who will battle for supremacy in the principality.
Piastri currently leads Norris by 13 points, having finished second here last year, while Norris has only one Monaco podium—a third place in 2021. Piastri expressed confidence heading into the race, hoping to improve on last year’s strong performance.
Monaco is known for its unpredictability, where the fastest car doesn’t always guarantee victory due to the difficulty of overtaking on the narrow streets. This year, a mandatory second pit stop has been introduced to add some excitement to the race.
Verstappen, who finished sixth in Monaco last year, is cautious about his chances given the track’s low-speed demands. Meanwhile, Red Bull’s team principal Christian Horner remains optimistic about their improving momentum in the championship.
Ferrari’s challenges were clear at Imola, where neither car advanced to the final qualifying session, exposing the team’s lack of single-lap speed. Leclerc acknowledged the upcoming weekend would be tough but hopes the unique demands of Monaco might allow them to score a strong result.
Mercedes, despite a tough time at Imola, believe their qualifying form could give them an edge, with George Russell aiming for a podium finish. Rookie Kimi Antonelli will also experience Monaco for the first time in Formula One, joining five other newcomers familiar with the circuit from junior categories.
