Championship leader Oscar Piastri and teammate Lando Norris are set to continue their battle for the drivers’ world title this weekend at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while also keeping McLaren on the verge of clinching the constructors’ championship.
The pair have dominated this season, winning 12 of the 16 races so far, and are in a position to secure McLaren’s 10th team title with seven races remaining. Piastri currently holds a 31-point advantage over Norris after the Briton narrowed the gap in Monza, keeping the championship battle intense.
The return to the Baku street circuit, where Piastri triumphed last year, presents McLaren with an opportunity to maintain momentum, though the unpredictable nature of the track means accidents and incidents are always a factor.
Norris, who retired from last month’s Dutch Grand Prix due to a mechanical issue, cannot afford another setback. McLaren could clinch the constructors’ crown with a 1-2 finish, or by outscoring Ferrari by nine points if Red Bull or Mercedes do not take maximum points.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is aiming for a fifth consecutive pole position in Baku, but despite the team showing signs of improvement, he has yet to secure a victory there and remains winless this season.
Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton has also struggled, still chasing his first podium of the year. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen remains a formidable contender, having demonstrated the ability to exceed his car’s potential with his recent Monza win.
The Dutchman hopes to carry this positive momentum into Baku, where McLaren currently leads Ferrari by 337 points in the constructors’ standings. Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vasseur, admitted McLaren is performing on a different level, while Mercedes aims to rebound after a disappointing weekend in Italy, with team boss Toto Wolff stressing the need to recover ground in the final eight races.
