After a series of recent victories, Max Verstappen is closing the gap on Oscar Piastri and could engineer one of Formula One’s most remarkable comebacks.
Max Verstappen is proving that nothing is impossible in Formula One, as the four-time world champion mounts a potential comeback that could go down as one of the sport’s most extraordinary. After trailing McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by 104 points at the end of August, few would have predicted Verstappen could still contend for a fifth consecutive championship. The Dutch driver admitted he would have dismissed such a suggestion at the time.
However, a string of victories—winning three of the last four races—has brought him within 40 points of Piastri, narrowing the deficit significantly. In the recent Austin Grand Prix alone, Verstappen recovered 23 crucial points, underscoring his relentless push toward the title.
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies praised Verstappen’s performance, describing it as “history in the making.” After a flawless weekend in the United States, where he claimed both the sprint and Grand Prix from pole position, Mekies highlighted Verstappen’s ability to continually exceed expectations. “He surprises us every time he hits the track, both in terms of performance and precision,” Mekies said.
Jonathan Wheatley, Sauber’s principal and former Red Bull sporting director, echoed these sentiments, noting that Verstappen should never be underestimated. “What a dominant weekend from Max. It’s a pleasure to watch him drive. If I were McLaren, I’d be constantly looking in my rearview mirror,” Wheatley commented. While acknowledging the challenge of closing the remaining gap, he added that Verstappen has a career-long habit of defying the odds.
Verstappen himself is aware of the challenge ahead. “We need to be perfect in every aspect to have a chance, and that’s exactly what we’ll focus on,” he said. He emphasized the importance of meticulous preparation, optimal car setup, and minimizing mistakes in the upcoming races.
The F1 championship now turns to Mexico next weekend, where Verstappen will continue his pursuit of a historic fifth consecutive title, keeping fans and rivals alike on edge.
