Max Verstappen Slams Mercedes Rival Over Delta Rule Breach in Tense Canada GP Qualifying Session

Posted : 30 May 2026

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen qualified sixth for the Canadian Grand Prix after a highly frustrating qualifying session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The Dutchman consistently struggled with a severe lack of straight-line speed during the opening segments of the session. He later admitted to trackside reporters that the sudden missing performance felt incredibly confusing.

The session grew even more intense during the crucial final Q3 shootout. Verstappen encountered a slow-moving Mercedes vehicle during his preparation phase for a final flying lap. The four-time world champion immediately voiced his immense anger over the team radio to his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. He aggressively demanded an investigation into his rival's driving behavior.

"This Mercedes in front, he is massively illegal on his delta for no reason," Verstappen shouted over the radio. The Dutch driver did not expand on the incident, but he was referring to the strict minimum speed limits. Drivers must stay above a specific pace on out-laps to avoid creating dangerous track obstructions.

The incident added to an incredibly chaotic weekend for the Mercedes team. Earlier in the day, George Russell and rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli suffered a major internal conflict during the sprint race. Antonelli furiously complained that Russell forced him completely off the track at turn eight. Team boss Toto Wolff had to intervene directly on the radio to quiet the Italian driver.

Russell eventually secured pole position for Sunday's main event just ahead of Antonelli. Verstappen will start well back on the third row but retains hope for a strong recovery. Red Bull figures expect heavy rain to impact the Montreal circuit on Sunday afternoon. The governing body has officially triggered a rain hazard rule to allow emergency setup changes.
