Max Verstappen’s Monaco Grand Prix came to a sudden end on the very first lap after a technical failure struck his Red Bull car before he could even complete a racing lap. The four-time world champion, who had started on the front row, was unable to get off the line properly and was quickly forced into retirement from the race.
Verstappen had been aiming to take advantage of Monaco’s notoriously narrow circuit, where track position is vital due to the difficulty of overtaking. However, as the lights went out, his car failed to respond, leaving him stranded while the rest of the field launched into Turn 1.
The Dutch driver initially attempted to continue at reduced speed but soon returned to the pits at the end of the opening lap, ending his race prematurely. Speaking over team radio, he expressed frustration as he reported unusual engine behaviour even before the start, describing the situation as the race being “destroyed” by the issue.
Despite the chaos around him, Verstappen managed to avoid further incident by moving aside on the grid, allowing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to pass safely as the field streamed past.
At the front, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli capitalised on his pole position to retain the lead into the first corner. The championship leader now finds himself in a strong position to secure a fifth consecutive Grand Prix victory, controlling the race after the early drama eliminated one of his biggest rivals.
