Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula One world champion, and his partner Kelly Piquet, announced the arrival of their daughter, Lily, on Friday. Verstappen, who had been set to participate in practice and sprint qualifying at the Miami Grand Prix, had his media commitments canceled the previous day, allowing him to spend time with his growing family.
The couple shared the news on social media, posting pictures of their new daughter, with a heartfelt message that read, “Welcome to the world, sweet Lily. Our hearts are fuller than ever – you are our greatest gift. We love you so much.”
Piquet, daughter of Brazil's legendary triple Formula One champion Nelson Piquet, already has a four-year-old daughter, Penelope, from her previous relationship with former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat.
Verstappen's announcement makes him one of only two fathers currently on the Formula One grid, joining Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber. The departure of Sergio Perez and Kevin Magnussen has left both Verstappen and Hulkenberg as the only fathers on the track.
Hulkenberg, who won the Le Mans 24 Hours, spoke about how fatherhood has positively impacted his racing performance. He explained that being a father had not slowed him down but instead provided a beneficial balance outside of racing.
Similarly, Mercedes driver George Russell, who has nieces and nephews, shared his belief that having children brings joy and motivation without negatively affecting a driver's professional focus, citing the example of past champions who have thrived while balancing family life.
