Max Verstappen, Red Bull Enter New Era at Belgian Grand Prix Amid Team Changes and Title Battles

Posted : 24 July 2025

The 2024 Formula One season enters a pivotal phase as Max Verstappen and Red Bull prepare to compete at the Belgian Grand Prix without long-time team principal Christian Horner. This marks the first race weekend since Horner’s unexpected dismissal after two decades at the helm, during which he helped steer Verstappen to four consecutive world championships. Verstappen, born in Belgium, welcomes the fresh start under new leadership as the team aims to regain momentum on the high-speed Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Laurent Mekies, recently promoted from Red Bull’s junior team, Racing Bulls, now carries the weighty responsibility of maintaining the team’s competitive edge and restoring stability amid recent turmoil. Mekies’ engineering expertise and calm approach contrast with the stormy period that preceded his arrival, which included investigations into Horner, loss of the constructors' title to McLaren, and key staff departures.

Despite the off-track upheaval, Verstappen remains focused. “Spa is a classic and always my favourite track on the calendar,” he said, highlighting the circuit’s challenging layout and unique elevation changes. After a disappointing fifth-place finish at Silverstone, Verstappen hopes to find his rhythm again and chase a fourth career win at Spa, beginning with the Saturday sprint race — Mekies’ first competitive test as team principal.

Meanwhile, the 2024 championship battle intensifies between McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Piastri leads the standings by eight points, but Norris is aiming for his third consecutive victory to close the gap. Their rivalry adds a compelling subplot to the Belgian and upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix double-header. Piastri, still smarting from a controversial penalty at Silverstone, is expected to bring a fiery determination to the Ardennes.

Other drivers are also eyeing Spa as an opportunity to shine. Mercedes’ George Russell aims to capitalize on often unpredictable weather conditions, seeking to reverse last year’s heartbreak when he lost victory due to his car being underweight. Ferrari arrives with a significant upgrade, eager to break their winless streak since Lewis Hamilton’s move to the team. Charles Leclerc’s recent podium finishes have given the Italian outfit renewed optimism.

The weekend will also see Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg return after achieving his first podium in a record 239 attempts. The team, soon to become Audi’s works squad, is gaining momentum and has collected notable points in recent races.

As Formula One roars back to life at Spa, all eyes will be on Verstappen and Red Bull to see if they can navigate this new era successfully, while the fierce title chase continues to heat up in the heart of Europe.
