Max Verstappen Admits Championship Battle with McLaren “Doesn’t Feel Like a Fight”

Posted : 30 May 2025

Max Verstappen of Red Bull has expressed a rather subdued outlook on his championship battle with the McLaren drivers this season, saying it "doesn't really feel like a fight." Despite winning two of the first seven races, Verstappen trails championship leader Oscar Piastri by 25 points, with Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris close behind. Verstappen acknowledged some positive moments but admitted that several races saw him and his team off the pace, making the season less enjoyable than hoped.

The four-time world champion’s cautious approach stems from the car’s performance strengths and weaknesses. While the Red Bull excels on tracks with medium and high-speed corners, it struggles on street circuits with tight, low-speed bends and rough surfaces.

Verstappen explained that he focuses on doing his best each weekend without getting overly invested in the title chase, whether the car can win or only finish mid-pack. This practical mindset helps him conserve energy and enjoy life outside racing despite the challenges.

Meanwhile, Piastri dismissed any notion that Verstappen is out of the championship race. The Australian driver emphasized that the points gap remains narrow, and Red Bull has shown competitiveness across various tracks. Piastri recognized the ongoing development of Red Bull’s car and insisted that Verstappen remains a serious contender for the title as the season progresses.
