Despite being under contract with Red Bull Racing until the end of the 2028 Formula 1 season, Max Verstappen continues to be linked with a potential move to Mercedes. The speculation gained momentum after Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff publicly expressed interest in signing the four-time world champion, but Verstappen has remained largely quiet on the matter.
Speaking to Viaplay, the Dutch driver dismissed the chatter, stating, “The more I say about it, the more it will be reported in the media. And I certainly do not want that. I determine my own future.”
Wolff clarified that his admiration for Verstappen’s talent has no impact on ongoing negotiations with current Mercedes driver George Russell, whose contract expires at the end of the season. He emphasized that Russell’s deal remains on track and that any conversations about Verstappen concern long-term strategy. Meanwhile, Verstappen’s own future may hinge on Red Bull’s performance this season, with reports suggesting his contract includes performance-related clauses.
Currently third in the driver standings with 155 points, Verstappen is keeping his focus on the present, following a disappointing retirement at the Austrian Grand Prix due to a collision with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli. Reflecting on his season, he said, “Around the summer break I think it will be clear what will happen… But I am very relaxed about everything. I just do my thing.” As rumors swirl, Verstappen remains grounded and committed to racing on his terms.
