Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco will both remain under medical observation after suffering fractures in separate high-speed crashes during a heavily disrupted Catalan Grand Prix on Sunday.
Marquez’s incident occurred when Pedro Acosta’s bike suddenly lost power directly ahead of him, leaving the Gresini Ducati rider with no time to react. He collided heavily with the rear of the KTM before being thrown off line, hitting the barriers and tumbling violently through the gravel. The severity of the crash immediately brought out medical teams and triggered an early race stoppage.
Following scans at hospital, doctors confirmed that Marquez sustained a small fracture in a vertebra near his neck along with a broken right collarbone. He was scheduled for surgery later in the day. Despite the seriousness of the incident, he later reassured fans on social media, saying he was in good hands and thanking supporters for their messages.
The race resumed after the initial red flag, but further drama unfolded when Zarco was involved in a multi-rider crash at the first corner of the restart. The LCR Honda rider braked late and collided with both Francesco Bagnaia and Luca Marini, causing a three-bike pile-up that brought the race to a second halt.
Zarco was seen sliding through the gravel with his leg caught in the aftermath of the crash. He was later taken to hospital for further evaluation, where medical checks revealed ligament damage in his knee, a minor fracture in his left ankle, and no break to his femur.
The French rider later updated fans on social media, confirming he would remain in hospital for observation while expressing relief that his injuries were not more severe. He described the incident as frightening but reassured supporters that he expected to recover.
