Marco Bezzecchi impressed in Friday’s practice at the season-opening Thailand MotoGP, posting a new track record and finishing fastest ahead of defending world champion Marc Marquez. The Aprilia rider completed a lap of the Buriram circuit in 1 minute 28.526 seconds, edging out Marquez on his Ducati by 0.421 seconds.
Marquez is aiming to match the record of eight world titles this season after a dominant campaign last year. Despite this, Bezzecchi demonstrated early he will be a serious contender, setting his updated track record at the end of a session that largely avoided rain despite threatening clouds and distant thunder. The Italian had also topped the morning free practice.
VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio secured third place in the afternoon session, followed closely by KTM’s Pedro Acosta, Aprilia’s Jorge Martin, and Gresini’s Alex Marquez. Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, the reigning 2022 and 2023 world champion, struggled and finished 15th, meaning he must participate in Saturday’s first qualifying session.
Marquez, still recovering from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the final four races of last season, initially faced challenges but climbed the timesheets in the final 20 minutes. He has adapted his riding style to accommodate the injury while aiming to return to full fitness.
Turkey’s Toprak Razgatlioglu, a three-time Superbike champion making his MotoGP debut, ended the session 21st out of 22 riders. Other incidents included Jorge Martin crashing during the morning practice and Ai Ogura falling in the afternoon.
The top ten riders from Friday’s practice secure spots for the second qualifying session on Saturday, which determines the first four rows of the grid. They will be joined by the two fastest riders from the first qualifying session, setting the stage for the sprint race on Saturday and the main GP on Sunday.
