Spain’s Marc Marquez moved to the top of the MotoGP world championship standings after winning a dramatic sprint race at the Indonesian Grand Prix on Saturday. The Ducati rider secured victory in the 13-lap contest at the Mandalika International Circuit, opening a four-point advantage over compatriot Jorge Martin with only five race weekends remaining.
Japan’s Ai Ogura finished second for Aprilia-Trackhouse, while Italy’s Fabio Di Giannantonio claimed third place for Ducati’s VR46 team. Martin, who had briefly led the race on his Aprilia, crossed the finish line in fourth under hot and dry conditions.
Marquez now has 343 championship points, compared with Martin’s 339, after taking the lead in the standings for the first time this season. The reigning world champion said he was growing increasingly confident and emphasised the importance of managing the race carefully, particularly while keeping Ogura behind him.
The sprint began with a major incident at the first corner, where pole-sitter Raul Fernandez and Italy’s Marco Bezzecchi collided and crashed out. Martin capitalised on the disruption to take the lead, with Marquez following closely behind as both riders started from the second row.
Martin gradually built a gap of around 1.5 seconds and appeared to be in control at the halfway point. However, he later slowed and allowed Marquez to move ahead, reportedly because of concerns over tyre pressure and the risk of a penalty.
Marquez maintained his advantage to secure his first victory at the Indonesian circuit. Martin attempted to fight back but ran wide during his pursuit, dropping to fourth and surrendering the championship lead.
The result gives Marquez a significant boost heading into Sunday’s Indonesian Grand Prix, where he will aim to extend his advantage. With five race weekends remaining after this round, the battle for the MotoGP title remains finely poised.
