Marc Marquez Wins Australian MotoGP Sprint as Martin Crashes Out

Posted : 24 October 2026

Marc Marquez took a major step towards the MotoGP world championship after winning Saturday’s sprint race at Phillip Island, while title rival Jorge Martin crashed out during their intense battle for the lead. Starting from pole position, the Ducati rider secured victory in the 13-lap contest to move 10 points clear at the top of the standings.

The reigning seven-time world champion produced a strong performance in qualifying and carried that momentum into the sprint. His brother Alex Marquez finished second, while Fabio Di Giannantonio completed an all-Ducati podium in third place.

Martin began the race from fourth position but quickly moved into contention. After initially settling behind Marquez, the Spaniard overtook him on lap three to take the lead, setting up a fierce contest between the championship’s leading riders.

The pair repeatedly exchanged positions as they pushed to gain an advantage. Martin made a costly error on lap five when he ran wide, allowing Marquez to regain the lead. However, the Aprilia rider continued attacking as the battle intensified.

Martin’s race ended on lap eight when he lost control of his motorcycle and slid into the gravel while fighting for the lead. The crash handed Marquez a clear route to victory and significantly altered the championship picture.

After the race, Marquez acknowledged that Martin had been fast but said both riders had pushed themselves to the limit. He explained that he had focused on defending his position as the two Spaniards fought aggressively for the win.

Martin was taken to the circuit’s medical centre following the accident. Subsequent examinations confirmed a fracture to his right radius, with a possible fracture to the ulna also reported. He was ruled out of Sunday’s Grand Prix, bringing his Australian race weekend to an early end.

Marco Bezzecchi finished fourth for Aprilia, maintaining third place in the championship, 50 points behind Marquez. Pedro Acosta took fifth for KTM, while Ai Ogura initially crossed the line in sixth before a post-race tyre-pressure penalty changed the official classification.

The sprint victory gives Marquez an important advantage heading into the final Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. The circuit has been a fixture on the MotoGP calendar since 1997, but the event is scheduled to move to a street circuit in Adelaide from 2027.

With Martin sidelined for Sunday’s race, Marquez has a valuable opportunity to strengthen his championship position. His sprint triumph has put him in control of the title fight as the season reaches a crucial stage.
