Marc Marquez is set to contend for his seventh MotoGP world championship this weekend in Japan, a milestone that would match the legendary Valentino Rossi’s record. The Spanish Ducati rider has amassed an impressive 512 points this season and needs just three more than his brother Alex Marquez to clinch the title with five races remaining in the 22-round season.
A victory at Motegi would mark Marquez’s first championship since 2019, capping a remarkable comeback from a series of injuries that began with a broken right arm in 2020. The 32-year-old has been in outstanding form this year, already setting a single-season points record for a MotoGP rider.
Marquez’s last win in Japan came in 2019, yet his dominance has been clear in 2025, with 11 wins in 16 races and 14 victories in 16 sprint events.
“We’ll approach Motegi the same way, maintaining the same performance level we’ve shown in all these races,” Marquez said. “There are six events left in the season, but we want to wrap up the title race as soon as possible.”
Marquez’s recent campaign has been nearly flawless, aside from a rare slip in the San Marino sprint. He rebounded in the Grand Prix the following day, overtaking pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi on lap 12 to secure victory, marking his 99th career win across MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3.
His path to the title has been aided by teammate Francesco Bagnaia’s inconsistent results and injuries to defending champion Jorge Martin. Bagnaia, a two-time world champion, has only one win this season and has finished no higher than seventh in his last four races.
Meanwhile, Alex Marquez has been the closest challenger, trailing by nearly 100 points to Bagnaia in third place, but still aiming to secure the runner-up position in the championship.
Last year’s Japanese Grand Prix saw Bagnaia dominate both the sprint and the main race, while Marquez, riding for Gresini, finished third after battling Enea Bastianini. Fast-forward 12 months, and Marquez is now a dominant force in the title race.
Fans can also expect a glimpse of Marquez’s playful celebrations, inspired by Lionel Messi. In San Marino, he removed his racing leathers and presented them to the crowd, echoing Messi’s famous gesture after scoring a late winner for Barcelona in 2017.
“The championship celebrations are getting closer and closer,” Marquez said. “It looks like a matter of time, but I want to keep the same mentality. Now we need to close as soon as possible, but I know Alex is also super fast, and he’s fighting for second place in the championship.”
