Home favourite Marc Márquez delivered a commanding performance to secure pole position at the Spanish MotoGP during a rain-affected qualifying session at Jerez. Riding his Ducati, the reigning champion produced a fastest lap of 1:48.087, edging Honda’s Johann Zarco by 0.140 seconds, while Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the front row more than a second off the pace.
Márquez’s brother, Álex Márquez, had set the pace in Friday practice but could not replicate that form in qualifying. He suffered a crash at Turn 9 yet recovered to secure fifth place on the grid. He will start from row two alongside championship leader Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia Racing and KTM’s Pedro Acosta.
Marc Márquez admitted the wet conditions played to his strengths, explaining that smoother riding and controlled aggression were key to his performance. The result marked his first pole position since August 2025, ending a long wait at the front of the grid.
The challenging conditions also caught out several riders during the session. Jorge Martín and Fermín Aldeguer both crashed, while earlier in Q1, riders such as Franco Morbidelli and Jack Miller also went down on the slippery circuit.
Attention now turns to the sprint race in Jerez, set to take place later on Saturday, where Márquez will look to convert pole position into victory on home soil.
