Lewis Hamilton Still Frustrated With Ferrari After Mexico GP Clash With Leclerc

Posted : 06 November 2026

Lewis Hamilton has admitted that he remains unhappy with Ferrari following his controversial opening-lap battle with teammate Charles Leclerc at last weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix. Speaking ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion revealed that he had not yet held detailed discussions with Leclerc or team principal Fred Vasseur about the incident, which he believes cost Ferrari a potential one-two finish.

Hamilton started the Mexico race from pole position and was hoping to convert his strong qualifying performance into a victory. However, an aggressive exchange with Leclerc during the opening lap saw both Ferrari drivers run off the track, allowing Max Verstappen to take the lead. Leclerc rejoined ahead after cutting across the grass, while Hamilton lost momentum and dropped behind the Red Bull driver.

Hamilton eventually finished second, with Leclerc taking fourth after receiving a five-second penalty. The British driver believes Ferrari had the pace to secure both leading positions and wants the team to address the circumstances that allowed the opportunity to slip away.

The 41-year-old explained that discussions had been delayed because Vasseur had returned to Italy, while Leclerc travelled to Monaco to spend time with his family following the birth of his first child. Hamilton also suggested that Leclerc tends to race him more aggressively than other competitors, pointing to similar situations involving the Monegasque's previous teammates Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz.

Despite his frustration, Hamilton praised Ferrari's recent progress, highlighting the team's development work and improved results over the previous races. He stressed that the team must learn from the incident and establish a way to prevent similar problems in future races.

Ferrari team principal Vasseur has also expressed disappointment over the lost opportunity, although he has avoided publicly blaming either driver. He indicated that the situation requires internal discussions, particularly given the effort invested by the team's workforce.

Hamilton will now turn his attention to Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos, which marks his 400th Formula One race. The Brazilian circuit holds special significance for him, having secured his first world championship there in 2007. He has also recorded three victories and seven podium finishes at the venue, and is determined to mark the milestone with another strong result.
