Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has returned from the summer break with renewed confidence, saying he is in the best physical condition of his career as he continues his pursuit of an eighth world title. The Ferrari driver spent much of the three-week shutdown focused on training rather than his usual downtime.
Hamilton, 41, currently sits second in the championship, 50 points behind Mercedes leader Kimi Antonelli. Despite the deficit, the Briton believes Ferrari has moved into a promising position and that the team can give him the platform needed to reduce the gap during the second half of the campaign.
The veteran driver described this year's break as unlike any previous summer pause during his long F1 career. Instead of taking time away from the sport and enjoying a more relaxed schedule, he used the shutdown as an opportunity to increase his fitness, completing three weeks of intensive training.
Hamilton believes the work has paid off and says he has never returned from a summer break feeling fitter. His improved physical condition comes as he prepares for a demanding run of races and attempts to mount a championship comeback.
His confidence also reflects a significant change in his relationship with Ferrari. Hamilton endured a difficult first season with the Italian team and was openly critical of his own performances. One year later, however, he believes the squad has responded to his feedback and made important changes that have improved the car and his overall confidence.
Hamilton described Ferrari as being in a particularly strong position and said the team should continue developing the foundation it has established. The improved atmosphere has given him greater belief that he can challenge Antonelli as the season progresses.
The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort provides Hamilton with another major motivation. Despite his extraordinary record in Formula One, he has never won at the circuit, and this weekend represents his final opportunity to do so because the Dutch Grand Prix is being removed from the F1 calendar after the 2026 race.
Hamilton is therefore determined to make the most of his final appearance at Zandvoort. With his fitness at an all-time high, a more competitive Ferrari underneath him and a sizeable championship deficit to overcome, the seven-time champion is entering the second half of the season with renewed determination.
