Lewis Hamilton Relaxed Over Ferrari Contract Status Following Charles Leclerc Extension

Posted : 05 June 2026

The driver market at Scuderia Ferrari has taken center stage ahead of this weekend's highly anticipated Monaco Grand Prix. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has dismissed suggestions that he is in a hurry to open negotiations for a new contract with the Italian team. His comments come immediately after teammate Charles Leclerc committed his long-term future to the Maranello-based squad.

Leclerc signed a lucrative multi-year contract renewal that is expected to keep him at Ferrari into the 2030s. The Monegasque driver also received a substantial salary increase; this bump elevates his estimated annual earnings to approximately 50 million euros. When combined with Hamilton's reported 60 million euro salary, Ferrari will become the first team in Formula One history to exceed 100 million euros in total driver wages for a single season.

Hamilton originally joined the Italian outfit ahead of the 2025 season on an initial two-year contract structure. The arrangement secures his services until the end of the 2026 campaign; however, it grants him the exclusive option to trigger an extension for 2027. Despite the intense media scrutiny surrounding his long-term future and potential retirement plans, the 41-year-old British racing icon remains completely unbothered by the current lack of formal discussions.

The veteran driver explained to the media in the Monaco paddock that any potential extension talks remain a distant priority. He emphasized that he has plenty of time left on his current contract; therefore, he is not actively engaging in those specific roster conversations. Hamilton clarified that his continuation with the team is an operational objective rather than an active debate.

The primary focus for both drivers remains on reversing Ferrari's difficult start to the 2026 championship campaign. Rival team Mercedes has completely dominated the opening phase of the season by winning every single Grand Prix; consequently, Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli holds a commanding lead in the drivers' standings. Hamilton remains highly optimistic about fighting at the front of the grid this weekend; he noted that the nimble chassis of the Ferrari SF-26 car should perform exceptionally well on the tight, low-speed street circuit of Monte Carlo.
