Lewis Hamilton reflects on controversial 2021 championship outcome

Posted : 03 April 2024

Lewis Hamilton has expressed acceptance of the controversial conclusion to his 2021 championship battle with Max Verstappen, despite feeling "robbed" of what could have been his record-breaking eighth Formula One title. At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, FIA race director Michael Masi's incorrect application of F1's rulebook led to a contentious final-lap restart, ultimately allowing Verstappen to overtake Hamilton dramatically and secure his first championship.

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Hamilton shared his perspective on the race, acknowledging the sense of being deprived of victory. Reflecting on the moment, he emphasized the emotional journey he shared with his father, Anthony, who was by his side during the race's tumultuous conclusion. Hamilton recounted the significance of his father's support, instilling in him the values of resilience and dignity in facing adversity.

Despite his disappointment, Hamilton revealed a sense of pride in how he handled the situation, particularly in his decision to congratulate Verstappen after the race. He recognized the profound impact of that moment and its significance in shaping his personal narrative. Hamilton admitted that while he still feels the weight of the event when reminded of it, he has found peace with the outcome over time.

Hamilton's acceptance of the Abu Dhabi result underscores his resilience and ability to navigate challenges, both on and off the track. Despite narrowly missing out on a historic achievement, he remains focused on the future, determined to reclaim his position at the pinnacle of Formula One after enduring a winless streak since the race preceding the Abu Dhabi finale.
