Lewis Hamilton Continues Ferrari Preparations with Testing

Posted : 29 January 2025

Lewis Hamilton is continuing his preparations for the 2024 Formula 1 season by testing with his new Ferrari team at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya this week. The seven-time world champion, who made a switch from Mercedes to Ferrari, joined his teammate Charles Leclerc for a day of testing, with both drivers behind the wheel of the 2023 F1 car.

This session, which took place on Tuesday, marked an important step in Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari after spending 12 years with Mercedes.

Hamilton had already begun his acclimatization to Ferrari during an initial test at their Fiorano track in Italy last week. The team is keen to ensure that Hamilton is fully prepared for the upcoming season, focusing on getting him comfortable with Ferrari's procedures and establishing effective working relationships.

A key part of his integration into the team involves collaborating with his new race engineer, Riccardo Adami, as they adapt to each other's methods of operation.

The test session in Spain was conducted behind closed doors, with few details released to the public. Hamilton took over from Leclerc in the afternoon after his teammate completed the morning session.

Ferrari is expected to continue testing in Spain for three days, but their testing is limited by F1 regulations, allowing drivers to cover only 1,000km (621 miles) per year in previous-generation cars. The 2023 Ferrari car is the latest model allowed for testing under these restrictions.

Hamilton’s work with Ferrari will continue as he prepares for the 2024 season. He will soon drive the 2025 Ferrari, which will be unveiled on February 19, before participating in the official pre-season testing in Bahrain from February 26-28.

A key challenge for Hamilton will be adjusting to Ferrari's engine procedures, as he is accustomed to the Mercedes power unit. F1 engines have complex energy recovery systems and control processes, and each manufacturer has unique software and operating procedures, which will require Hamilton to invest time in mastering Ferrari's system.
