Lewis Hamilton Celebrates Emotional First Ferrari Grand Prix Victory in Spain

Posted : 15 June 2026

Lewis Hamilton described his first Grand Prix victory with Ferrari as one of the most emotional moments of his career after triumphing at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion, now in his second season with the Italian team, delivered a memorable performance to finish ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell and McLaren’s Lando Norris. The result produced the first all-British Formula One podium since the 1968 United States Grand Prix, when Jackie Stewart led home Graham Hill and John Surtees.

Hamilton’s success marked a significant milestone following a challenging debut season with Ferrari. Despite competing in all 24 Grands Prix during his first year with the team, he failed to secure a podium finish, although he did claim victory in the sprint race in China.

Reflecting on the achievement, Hamilton admitted that finding the right words to describe his emotions was difficult. He said the moment exceeded anything he had imagined and revealed that celebrating with Ferrari’s mechanics and engineers after the race was an unforgettable experience.

The victory was aided by race circumstances when a virtual safety car period allowed Hamilton to make a pit stop and retain track position. However, he had already established himself as a strong contender for the win and looked capable of challenging the Mercedes drivers regardless of the interruption.

The race also had a significant impact on the championship battle. Current points leader Kimi Antonelli retired from second place with only four laps remaining, allowing Norris to move onto the podium and reducing Antonelli’s advantage at the top of the standings to 41 points.

Both Russell and Norris praised Hamilton after the race. Norris highlighted how much the victory appeared to mean to the Ferrari driver and said it was rewarding to see his bold career move rewarded with success. Russell, who spent three seasons alongside Hamilton at Mercedes, described the decision to join Ferrari as courageous and said it was satisfying to see the partnership finally deliver a Grand Prix victory.

Russell also noted the significance of sharing the podium with two fellow British drivers, calling it a special moment in Formula One history and a fitting tribute to one of the sport’s greatest competitors. Hamilton’s breakthrough win now provides fresh momentum for Ferrari as the season enters a crucial phase.
