Lando Norris acknowledged that winning the Formula One World Championship will inevitably change his life, but he emphasized his desire to remain the same person. An early sign of his new status came on Monday when he announced he would race with the No. 1 on his McLaren car next season, setting aside his familiar No. 4.
Speaking to Reuters Television a day after clinching the title at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 26-year-old explained that the decision was made with his team in mind.
“I wanted to keep No. 4 because I’ve always been happy with it and it fits my logo, but I will use No. 1 because I have to,” Norris said, reflecting on the significance of the number for his engineers and mechanics. “This opportunity is rare, and it’s more for them than for me. That’s what matters most.”
Despite his championship win, Norris insisted his personal life would remain largely unchanged. He recounted that even after a night of celebrations, he started the day with a simple McDonald’s breakfast and noted the increased attention while going for a swim.
“More people approached me than usual, but it won’t alter how I live my life,” he said, adding that he plans to continue spending time with friends and family, playing golf and padel, and maintaining his usual routines.
Norris acknowledged that the public would now see him differently as a champion rather than just one of many drivers on the grid. Nonetheless, he intends to keep his grounded approach, focusing on his relationships and personal interests outside racing.
The Briton secured the title by two points over Max Verstappen, ending the Dutch driver’s four-year dominance, and finished 13 points ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri, who will return next season aiming for the top spot.
“Oscar had an incredible season, and I’m glad I got to race and compete against him. There will be many more battles between us, and I look forward to continuing our friendship while remaining fierce competitors,” Norris said.
Looking ahead, Norris will return to Yas Marina on Tuesday to begin testing for the 2026 season. He admitted he would likely drive with a bigger smile, reflecting on his victory, but remains focused on preparing for next year. “One championship done, and now it’s about what we can do to achieve it again next season,” he added.
