McLaren’s championship leader, Lando Norris, set the fastest time in Thursday’s second practice session at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, a run marked by two late red flags. The Briton, who currently leads teammate Oscar Piastri by 24 points in the drivers’ standings, completed his quickest lap just moments before the session was halted due to track concerns.
Norris clocked a leading time of 1:33.602 around the 6.201-km street circuit, edging Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli by 0.029 seconds. Soon after, the session was suspended when officials investigated a potential loose manhole cover on the track.
When running resumed with six minutes left, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc suffered a gearbox issue that left him stranded behind a safety barrier, triggering a second red flag and ending the session prematurely. Leclerc finished third, while several drivers—including Piastri—did not complete soft-tyre laps. Piastri placed 14th, nearly nine-tenths behind Norris.
Piastri, who once held a 34-point lead after his Dutch Grand Prix victory in August, has struggled recently and is without a podium in his last five outings. Norris cannot clinch the championship this weekend, but he could mathematically eliminate Max Verstappen’s bid for a fifth consecutive title. Verstappen, currently 49 points behind, ended the session ninth, 0.503 seconds off the leading pace.
Earlier in the day, Leclerc topped first practice with a 1:34.802 lap, followed by Williams driver Alexander Albon and Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda. The opening session was characterized by poor grip on the newly resurfaced Las Vegas Strip circuit, causing several drivers to slide or miss braking points. Norris brushed a wall during the session but escaped without damage.
