McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix after post-race inspections revealed that the skid blocks on both cars were below the minimum allowed depth. Norris had initially finished second behind Max Verstappen, with Piastri in fourth, but the technical breach elevated Mercedes’ George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to second and third respectively.
The disqualification is a setback for Norris, who still leads both Verstappen and Piastri by 24 points heading into the penultimate race of the season in Qatar. The 26-year-old Briton can clinch his first drivers’ championship in Qatar if he scores at least two points more than both rivals across the weekend.
With 58 points still available in the final two races, including a sprint event in Qatar, the title battle remains alive, while Verstappen continues to chase a fifth consecutive championship.
McLaren attributed the rule breach to unexpected “porpoising,” a high-frequency bouncing caused by aerodynamic disruptions, which increased contact between the car floor and the track. The team emphasized that the infraction was unintentional, noting that no deliberate attempt to circumvent regulations occurred. Norris described the situation as “frustrating” but said his focus would now turn to Qatar, aiming to deliver the best possible performance.
During the race, Norris had struggled to fend off Verstappen after running wide in the opening corner and losing the lead. Despite cautious tactics to preserve the skid blocks in the closing stages, he maintained his position ahead of Russell until the disqualification was confirmed.
Verstappen, who celebrated his sixth win of the season, remains firmly in contention but will need further setbacks for Norris to lose the championship.
