Kyle Larson's Double Duty Dream Ends in Crashes

Posted : 26 May 2025

Kyle Larson’s ambitious attempt to complete the storied “Double” — racing both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 in one day — ended in disappointment on both fronts. At the Indy 500, Larson lost control on lap 91 during a restart, spinning into Sting Ray Robb and ending his race in 27th place. The crash occurred just after he had fallen back due to a pit stop mishap. Despite showing early promise by starting on the front row and leading for 34 laps, his day unraveled due to mistakes and bad luck.

After the crash in Indianapolis, Larson was quickly flown to Charlotte Motor Speedway in hopes of salvaging the day in the Coca-Cola 600. Unfortunately, his luck didn’t improve. While running mid-pack after earlier issues, Larson got caught in a multi-car collision triggered by contact between Chase Briscoe and Ryan Blaney, which sent Daniel Suarez spinning into his path.

The damage to Larson’s car forced him to retire after 245 laps, finishing 37th. The rough day mirrored his 2024 attempt, which was cut short due to rain before he could even run a lap in Charlotte.

Reflecting on the grueling logistics and misfortune of attempting the Double, Larson admitted he was unsure about trying it again. He acknowledged that even without the Indy crash, tight scheduling and travel would likely have cut his NASCAR race short.

Still, he expressed interest in returning to the Indy 500 in the future, though less certain about repeating the full Double. With only Tony Stewart ever successfully completing both races in one day, Larson’s experience underscored just how difficult the feat remains.
