Kyalami Circuit Gets FIA Approval for F1 Upgrade, Paving Way for Return to Africa

Posted : 19 June 2025

The Kyalami Grand Prix circuit near Johannesburg has been approved for upgrades to meet Formula One standards, according to owner Toby Venter. Speaking on Wednesday, Venter revealed that the FIA had officially accepted the venue's grade one design proposals, positioning Kyalami for a potential return of F1 racing to Africa.

Kyalami, which last hosted an F1 Grand Prix in 1993, has long been a symbol of African motorsport heritage and is now poised for a historic revival.

Venter, who acquired the circuit in 2014, expressed enthusiasm for the FIA’s green light, calling it “a bold new chapter” for the venue and the continent.

The planned upgrades are considered “light-touch” engineering adjustments that will not alter the 4.5km layout but will enhance run-off areas, barriers, fencing, kerbs, and drainage.

These changes, according to the British firm handling the upgrades, can be completed in just three months. The FIA has given Kyalami a three-year window to finish the improvements.

Beyond the track enhancements, the upgrade plans include additional spectator zones and grandstands, making Kyalami the only FIA grade one certified venue in Africa once completed. Alongside Kyalami, Cape Town, Rwanda, and Morocco have also expressed interest in hosting Formula One events.

With momentum growing and infrastructure plans in motion, Africa may soon witness the return of a sport that last crowned Alain Prost as a Grand Prix winner on its soil more than three decades ago.
