Kimi Antonelli Wins Spanish GP to Extend F1 Championship Lead

Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 championship with a composed victory at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, securing his eighth win of the season at Madrid’s new Madring circuit.

The 20-year-old Mercedes driver finished 4.351 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, while Lando Norris completed the podium in third. Antonelli’s latest success increased his championship advantage to 81 points after 14 rounds.

Antonelli benefited from a crucial Virtual Safety Car period triggered by Lance Stroll’s crash. While Norris was unable to reach the pit lane before the VSC took effect, Antonelli made his stop under the neutralisation and emerged in a favourable position.

Norris had started from pole and controlled the opening stages, but the timing of the VSC turned the race in Antonelli’s favour. A slow McLaren pit stop later compounded Norris’ problems and left him unable to recover the lead.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari after leading for a large portion of the race, while Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate George Russell took fifth. Liam Lawson was sixth for Red Bull, followed by Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad and Audi’s Nico Hülkenberg.

The race also ended Lewis Hamilton’s record of completing every previous Grand Prix lap this season. The seven-time world champion retired on lap seven after suffering brake problems in his Ferrari.

Despite benefiting from the VSC, Antonelli acknowledged that Norris had deserved a better result. The Italian nevertheless maintained his composure through the closing stages to secure another important victory and further strengthen his position at the top of the championship.
