Kimi Antonelli on Brink of F1 History Ahead of Mexico City Grand Prix

Posted : 29 October 2026

Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of becoming Formula One’s youngest-ever world champion and Italy’s first title winner since 1953 as the championship heads to the Mexico City Grand Prix this weekend. The Mercedes driver needs only a ninth-place finish or better to secure the crown at 20 years and 68 days old, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s record by more than three years.

Antonelli strengthened his position by winning the United States Grand Prix in Austin last Sunday. He now holds a 123-point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell and leads Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton by 124 points, leaving both rivals with only a slim mathematical chance of denying him the championship.

The Italian has enjoyed a remarkable season, winning nine of the 18 races completed so far. His recent performances have demonstrated impressive consistency, with nine podium finishes in his last 11 races, alongside a fifth-place result and a 15th-place finish.

Despite being only 20, Antonelli has shown maturity and composure under pressure. While his personality away from the circuit remains youthful and playful, his performances behind the wheel have established him as one of the sport’s leading talents.

Antonelli insists he will approach the Mexican race as he would any other weekend, aiming to enjoy the competition while fighting for another victory. Rather than focusing solely on securing the championship, he wants to finish the race on a high note.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is already anticipating a celebration. He has joked that the team could mark the occasion with tequila in Mexico, or wait until the following Brazilian Grand Prix to celebrate with caipirinhas if the title is not secured this weekend.

Mercedes could also mathematically clinch the constructors’ championship in Mexico, although that would require a particularly favourable combination of results. The team currently enjoys a substantial lead over Ferrari in the standings.

Antonelli’s potential triumph is also likely to stir mixed emotions among Ferrari supporters. The Italian manufacturer previously had an opportunity to sign him when he was a promising young karting talent but decided against the move because of his age.

Former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has expressed admiration for Antonelli’s achievements while acknowledging that missing out on the youngster was a significant opportunity lost. He also suggested that driving for Ferrari at such a young age might have placed excessive pressure on the Italian.

Although Antonelli is close to sealing the title, he may face stiff competition for victory in Mexico. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has an impressive record at the circuit, having won there five times, and arrives after strong recent performances. McLaren’s Lando Norris, who won the race last year, and Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Hamilton could also challenge for the win.

For Antonelli, however, the priority will be finishing inside the top nine rather than taking unnecessary risks in pursuit of another victory.

Another major storyline will centre on Mexican favourite Sergio Perez, who is set to make his 300th Grand Prix start at his home race. The Cadillac driver recently extended his contract through 2029, ensuring he will remain with the American team for the next three seasons.

With Antonelli potentially making history, Mercedes chasing another major achievement and Perez celebrating a career milestone in front of his home fans, the Mexico City Grand Prix promises an eventful weekend.
